作为经济概念，“轻重”一词最早出现在春秋时期的《国语》中，原指金属铸币的分量轻重或价值高低。随着战国至西汉时期经济发展和全国统一市场展露雏形，在《管子·轻重篇》和《新书》《史记》《盐铁论》中又引申出商品价格贵贱的含义，并形成系统性的“轻重”之学，主张中央政府掌控货币和关键物资，利用商品流通和市场供求规律，发挥出类似现代宏观调控的效果，达到国家经济治理目标。
